What is Human Science?

Human science is the systematic study of human activity, behaviour and experience. It draws on disciplines including psychology, sociology, anthropology, economics and the humanities, using rigorous methods to understand how people think, behave, interact and make decisions.

At IGOR, human science provides the foundation for understanding the human element of complex systems. We apply it alongside systems thinking, computational methods and practical experience to address problems involving people, organisations, technologies and environments.

Can I have a quick conversation to see if IGOR could help with my problem?

Absolutely. We are happy to have an initial conversation about the problem you are trying to solve and explore where IGOR could add value.

Sometimes a conversation is all that is needed to clarify the problem or identify a way forward. If we can help, we can discuss the most appropriate way to engage us—whether through research, advice, consulting, professional services or specialist capability.

We already have a Human Factors team. What can IGOR add?

IGOR can work alongside an existing Human Factors or Human Science team, complementing established expertise rather than duplicating it.

Our broader capability means we can bring specialist skills where they are needed, provide additional capacity for a particular project, or introduce Human Science expertise that is not available within the existing team. Because our scientists work across disciplines and understand the environments in which Human Factors and Human Science are applied, we can integrate quickly and contribute directly to delivery.

Does IGOR work with universities?

Yes. IGOR has worked extensively with Australian universities and has developed collaborative relationships across academia, Defence, government and industry.

Our work has included collaboration with the University of South Australia, University of Adelaide, Australian National University, University of Sydney, University of New South Wales and Deakin University, among others.

These relationships allow us to bring together academic expertise, applied science and practical delivery when a problem requires a broader multidisciplinary approach.

How does IGOR make sure the work delivers what we need?

We start by working with our clients to understand the problem, the intended outcome and what IGOR needs to deliver to create value.

The project scope, approach and outputs are established at the outset, with our project managers and technical staff maintaining close engagement throughout delivery. We keep clients informed about progress and address issues or changing requirements as they arise.

Our aim is straightforward: the work should solve the problem it was commissioned to solve and leave the client with something useful.

What if we like an IGOR staff member so much that we want to hire them?

We understand that clients sometimes value the people they work with highly. IGOR’s objective is to build Human Science capability, including by developing excellent scientists and professionals who can make a strong contribution wherever they work.

If a client wishes to employ an IGOR team member during an existing engagement or within six months of the commencement of a project, we can discuss the appropriate recruitment or placement arrangement with the client.

Our priority is to maintain strong relationships with both our clients and our people, while supporting the growth of Human Science capability more broadly.
